Summary: Mickey finds the time to pay Disney Castle a visit. (early KH2)

When Minnie heard the door open and shut again, she paid it no attention whatsoever - Disney Castle was the safest place in all the worlds, thanks to the power of the cornerstone. She expected to hear Daisy's voice, going on about something cheerfully insignificant, or perhaps it was Pluto, or any one of the fine people in her castle town. There was a soft clink, as if a chain rustled, and then there was a hand on her shoulder.

Before she could turn around, or exclaim, or any number of the things she likely would have done upon being surprised in such a way, a hand clamped over her mouth. "Not so loud," a voice muttered in her ear, and then - then, she relaxed everywhere. Oh. Oh.

"Mickey? Is that really you?"

He let her turn around in his arms, and then nothing in the world could've stopped her from grabbing him in a fierce hug. "What's going on?" she murmured. "Why the secrecy? We're safe here."

"We can't be sure. I'm taking a huge risk just being here, but I - " he faltered, just for a moment, and she smiled against his cheek. " - I had to let you know I was all right."

"You could have written," but she was teasing, and they both knew it. He wanted to see her, she wanted to see him, and a note would have been just as easy to trace.

"Mickey. What happened? You have to tell me everything."

"I can't." He bit his lip in remorse. The last time he'd looked this pained and unsure, he'd been gathering the courage to ask for her hand. But that was long ago, and this was entirely different. "I promise, when this is over I'll come home and I'll tell the whole story."

She nodded. Tugged at the hood of his coat. "How about just this, then? I'm terribly curious."

"This?" He looked down, as if he himself was surprised that he was still wearing it. "Incognito. The nobodies don't know the difference."

Her lips pressed in a thin line. "Nobodies."

"Yes." He knew the look; knew what was running through her head, and sighed. "Yes. I wish I could say it isn't true. I keep hoping that..."

But he trailed off, for a long moment, and she had to squeeze his shoulder to bring him back. "Hoping that what?"

"That the Ansem I knew still exists. The one who knew when to stop. This... all of this is because of him and yet, I still can't find it in me to lay the blame across his shoulders. He was my friend."

She pulled him close until he was nestled in the folds of her skirt, pressed cheek to cheek, in perfect sync. "Oh, Mickey. My hero. You'll find a way to make this right."

Mmm, I like! Mickey, actually, is one of my favorite characters. ^_^ And this piece was bittersweet and lovely. Thank you! =D
